FALL 2011 UPDATE

91.1 is dead. We're no longer on the Nashville airwaves. We fought for our rights, VSC played it dirty. Well even though some are suggesting there's still a chance to actually get WRVU back on air, we got nothing to do but make the best out of what we have.

Beginning tomorrow, September 1st 2011, WRVU will officially start broadcasting from HD radio. A new wrvu.org site is up, and online streaming will continue as it was. Another crucial change beginning from this semester is that if you miss a show you liked, you won't be able to just go to wrvu.org and listen to the recorded archives. For this show, I post my playlists after every show, I mean if you care.

Okay, so the fall season at WRVU officially begins tomorrow. Due to many reasons including the loss of the FM signal, I've decided to end Myths of the Near Future; I'm not quitting WRVU, I'll just be doing a different show. After three semesters and over 30 great shows, with the changes in the station, I thought it was also a time for me to change. The new show is called 'Atlantis to Interzone' , it's going to be an hour-long show focusing mainly on the international artists, mostly the new, independent, promising, up-and-coming ones, but the show will also contain a good amount of influential international artists and bands from the past. And yes, no genre limitations. I've been playing international acts on my shows, but I just wanted to solely focus on them, and make a more specialized show. We will be listening some of the best new music coming out of Brazil, Australia, Turkey, France, Spain, Japan, Sweden and many more countries.

Atlantis to Interzone will 'air' (not literally, unfortunately), every Friday on 8PM CST, beginning from this Friday, September 2nd 2011, till early December 2011. So if you used to like Myths of the Near Future, I hope you'll like this one too, there isn't going to be too much of a deviation in the sound of the show. So every Friday, @ 8PM CST, go to wrvu.org and stream it live.

Excited to be back on this Friday

Cheers,

DJ Ike

R.I.P. WRVU 91.1

It's been about two weeks since VSC , the body that governs WRVU 91.1, has announced that the transmitting license for 91.1 had been sold for around $3,000,000. This literally means WRVU 91.1 is DEAD.

For those of you that don't live in middle Tennessee area; nothing's changing. WRVU is now an internet only radio, meaning it is still streamable from www.wrvu.org. But selling 91.1 license means we are no longer on the Nashville airwaves. No longer a music loving local citizen will bump into new tunes that he/she would love and be inspired while shuffling on radio. What I have loved so far as a DJ was connecting randomly with dozens of different people I wouldn't otherwise, and getting immediate response about the music I play from them. Knowing that I would never be truly "on air", kills all the romanticism of being a DJ.

As for what I'll do, honestly, I have considered terminating Myths of the Near Future, after 3 incredible seasons, since this is not going to be any different than doing a simple podcast. I have no idea of the number of people truly following this show and blog, and it was a tough call, but I realized that no matter what I love music and am doing this for myself in the end of the day, so Myths of the Near Future will continue in the Fall. I'm also planning to upload the recorded episodes here from now on, we'll see how that goes.

As the WRVU family we saw this coming long time ago, tried to resist it, but VSC board had their minds set from the day one. It's hard to comprehend why a University possessing billions of dollars of endowment would sell it's radio station's license for $3 million, moreover given that WRVU 91.1 was Vanderbilt's only real connection with the local Nashville community. The time and effort dedicated to the cause by the community members themselves even shows how meaningful of an asset this was for Vanderbilt. This is no different than cutting your artery and than complaining for losing blood. No other organization meant this much for the community. The Vanderbilt - Nashville relationship is certainly damaged.

R.I.P. WRVU 91.1 (1953-2011)

Check back for updates on the upcoming season of Myths of the Near Future.

Till then, peace.

DJ Ike

What I've been listening to lately, #6

"Why in the night sky are the lights on?
Why is the earth moving 'round the sun?
Floating in a vacuum with no purpose, not a one.
Why in the night sky are the lights on?"

Some albums are special. I don't know about you, but time literally stops when I play Helplessness Blues, the Seattle outfit's second release.

This is a timeless album indeed. I'd quiet humbly like to predict that Helplessness Blues is a sort of an album that will be remembered as one of the masterpieces in the history of music for the years to come. This is a sort of an album that I'd make my child listen.

I could talk about Fleet Foxes for pages, but I'd like to keep this one as brief as I can..

Robin Pecknold is an extremely talented raconteur. He tells stories from his life, from the "every-man" 's life which we could relate to incredibly vividly. He is so much more than a modern folk hero, he is one of the best lyricists of his generation, and perhaps of all times. When he starts to sing, you feel dragged, left with no chance of escaping from his profound stories. Helplessness Blues mostly contains songs in which an individual's worries and dreams about the future and his life are investigated. The chronological arrangement of the songs also hint a consciously constructed story line. Story of a man searching for love, questioning the meaning of life, making honest remarks along the way, and looking from a romantic perspective while doing all of this.

The musicianship exposed throughout the album is also breath taking. Every thought, every effect, every single voice is calculated and performed with a committed mastery. You can hear the sweat, blood, and hard-work put into this record in every breath, every note. A particularly impressing part, at least for me, is the percussion work of J. Tillman, which magically converts otherwise -still beautiful, yet- serene folk melodies into ambitious, majestic sounding chants, anthems, ballads. The overall melodic progressions of the band throughout the album are somewhat experimental, and innovative. Fleet Foxes not only carry so-called folk music into a grandeur stage but also suggest novel forms, arrangements, possibilities about modern music. A particularly interesting track relative to that idea is 'The Shrine / An Argument'...

This is an album that will be a myth in the history of music in the future, possessing a potential of influencing rising musicians, by its brave, honest, and innovative take on music. Whether it's the endless arsenal of instruments, the deeply-touching songwriting, or the bold progressive character, Helplessness Blues is an epic album. We are witnessing history.

...News...

Since the 'Myths of the Future' will be off the air till September, I don't know how many people will actually be following the blog, but still I'll have things to share over the next few months, writing about music I think you should give a listen to, and etcetera..

Meanwhile, I'd like to note two upcoming releases that I've heard about past week, and am already highly anticipating them.

Ernest Greene

First of, the Georgia-based "chill-wave" outfit Washed Out, a.k.a. Ernest Greene, recently signed to the SubPop records. For various reasons SubPop is a label which I really appreciate, so them signing Greene was a particularly interesting move for me. Washed Out has so much potential, he already has a substantial following, and we'll probably see this guy touring Europe and eventually the world in the coming months/years. Greene turns simple musical ideas into elegant dream pop ballads with a production that has a rusty, retro quality to it. Washed Out's debut Within and Without is set to be released on July, so watch out.

Justin Vernon of Bon Iver

Another exciting upcoming-release-update that arrived in the past week was from Bon Iver.

Apparently the Wisconsin quartet is getting ready to release their sophomore effort, which will be eponymously titled as Bon Iver. It will be released on late June. Considering the critical acclaim of their debut For Emma, Forever Ago expectations are high for this one. Below is the somewhat-teaser video they have released about a month ago, although perhaps highly avant-garde to be called a promotion video.

Alright, that's it for now.. You might wanna check the blog perhaps weekly from now on since I'm aiming to use it more actively over the summer..

Cheers
