R.I.P. WRVU 91.1

It's been about two weeks since VSC , the body that governs WRVU 91.1, has announced that the transmitting license for 91.1 had been sold for around $3,000,000. This literally means WRVU 91.1 is DEAD.

For those of you that don't live in middle Tennessee area; nothing's changing. WRVU is now an internet only radio, meaning it is still streamable from www.wrvu.org. But selling 91.1 license means we are no longer on the Nashville airwaves. No longer a music loving local citizen will bump into new tunes that he/she would love and be inspired while shuffling on radio. What I have loved so far as a DJ was connecting randomly with dozens of different people I wouldn't otherwise, and getting immediate response about the music I play from them. Knowing that I would never be truly "on air", kills all the romanticism of being a DJ.

As for what I'll do, honestly, I have considered terminating Myths of the Near Future, after 3 incredible seasons, since this is not going to be any different than doing a simple podcast. I have no idea of the number of people truly following this show and blog, and it was a tough call, but I realized that no matter what I love music and am doing this for myself in the end of the day, so Myths of the Near Future will continue in the Fall. I'm also planning to upload the recorded episodes here from now on, we'll see how that goes.

As the WRVU family we saw this coming long time ago, tried to resist it, but VSC board had their minds set from the day one. It's hard to comprehend why a University possessing billions of dollars of endowment would sell it's radio station's license for $3 million, moreover given that WRVU 91.1 was Vanderbilt's only real connection with the local Nashville community. The time and effort dedicated to the cause by the community members themselves even shows how meaningful of an asset this was for Vanderbilt. This is no different than cutting your artery and than complaining for losing blood. No other organization meant this much for the community. The Vanderbilt - Nashville relationship is certainly damaged.

Check back for updates on the upcoming season of Myths of the Near Future.

Till then, peace.
